Veteran Campus Mentoring Program
Prism Patriot’s support of U.S.VETS-St. Louis has resulted in an innovative, educational program to help veteran students, either beginning their college experience or returning to a collegiate classroom. The Prism Patriot Veteran Campus Peer Mentoring initiative is sponsored by U.S.VETS-St. Louis through a donation from Prism Patriot.
According to a study by the Student Veterans of America, nearly two-thirds of university-level veterans leave college before their third semester. Most often, these students cite the overwhelming demands of math and writing requirements, along with the lack of veteran support networks, as the reasons for dropping out of college.
Prism Patriot Veteran Campus Peer Mentoring is designed to address fundamental, problematic areas for veteran students. From subject tutoring to mentoring to academic, social and business networking, this program will help new and returning students achieve successful college careers.
Its first session was a weeklong Veterans Pre-Collegiate Fellowship held at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis (UMSL) under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel James Craig (U.S. Army, Retired) associate teaching professor and chair of UMSL’s Department of Military and Veterans Studies.
Veteran students completed 20 hours of course work in college math, analytical reading and writing taught by faculty members from Washington University and UMSL. In addition, there was a business networking meeting with leading Saint Louis companies including Prism Medical, Promise Mobility, Boeing, Emerson, Experience on Demand and Monsanto.
Prism Patriot Veteran Campus Mentoring will continue to reach out to veteran students throughout the academic year to address their concerns, resolve their issues and even identify career opportunities with local companies. The program is designed to assist veteran students regardless of academic goals, whether pursuing an associate’s degree or a doctorate.
Schools in the Prism Patriot Veteran Campus Mentoring program include: Washington University, University of Missouri Saint Louis, Saint Louis University, Webster University, St. Louis Community College and St. Charles Community College.
Through U.S.VETS-St. Louis’ outreach to veteran students, they will know there are resources to help them make the transition from the military to a civilian academic environment to a professional career. The Prism Patriot Veteran Campus Mentoring is one resource they can count on.
